I made Soap!

Fall is in the air, but the only evidence is bare trees.  It was well into the 60's on November 8, 2015!  If you are a born and raised in North Dakota this can be confusing.  This confusion can make you do crazy things.

I made homemade bar soap.

Thanks to a Facebook friend for inspiration of posting her own homemade bar soap and thanks to the Nerdy Farm Wife's website for the recipe, http://thenerdyfarmwife.com/.

I now have soap to last me until next year around this time.  I could even give away quite a few and still be clean.

It wasn't very difficult.  Way easier than the Christmas caramels that I make.  I would suggest giving it a shot.  This batch cost about $25 for the ingredients (Olive Oil and Lye).

Restlessness and craziness also told me to make the Julia Child beef roast, rosemary buns, banana bread, and take the bigger dog on a long walk.  My low carb diet did go out the window this weekend.  Sometimes good things happen if you just have a little ambition (and craziness).

Halloween Treats that aren't just Candy

11 Candy Alternatives for Halloween

11 Candy Alternatives for Halloween
Sat, October 24, 2015
Perhaps you’re not feeling candy this year. Maybe you’ve experienced the wrath of an over-sugared six-year-old (or their parents). Maybe you can’t trust yourself to sit for hours by the front door with a massive quantity of chocolate without eating most of it yourself. Or maybe you’re a dentist. Don’t worry, there are plenty of things you can give trick-or-treaters instead of the sweet stuff. Here are a few:
1. Glow sticks
Could there be a more perfect accessory for Halloween? Kids can light them up with a snap and wear them as bracelets, necklaces and crowns. Bonus: they make it easier for parents to keep their eyes on their kiddos.
2. Stickers
Choose from the assortment of ghosts, witches and pumpkins available in stores in October or go with stickers with year-round appeal, like super heroes and animals.
3. Bubbles
Hours – or at least a few minutes – of bubble-blowing entertainment in every little bottle.
4. Plastic spider rings
The creepy-crawly bling kids love to wear.
5. Crazy straws
Halloween-themed straws can easily be found in dollar stores.
6. Fake fangs
These could also add a point of interest to your annual holiday photo card, if you’re so inclined.
7. Temporary tattoos
What kid doesn’t want a cool spiderweb on their bicep?
8. Slime
What exactly is the ooey-gooey stuff in the little cans? It remains a mystery, but kids definitely love to squish this classic toy.
9. Plastic jewelry
Sparkly rings, bracelets, necklaces and cheap tiaras are not only fun for kids to wear, but you can dress like a pirate as you hand out your glittering treasures.
10. Bouncy Balls
Beloved especially by kids who live in homes with hardwood floors.
11. Kazoos
Parents may hate you, but kids can lead their own parades as they head to the next house.

Firework Safety Tips

Here are some 4th of July safety tips.  Stay safe and have a great holiday!

Tip #1
Have a fire extinguisher readily available. This way if there was an accidental fire, the fire can be put out quickly.
Tip #2
Have water buckets and a hose available. This is also important in the case that a fire becomes larger than a small extinguisher can take care of.
Tip #3
Alcohol is a favorite of many for the holiday celebrations. However, it is important to keep alcohol away from children and animals. There is a potential risk of alcohol poisoning if consumed by a child or animal.  Alcohol and the use of fireworks do not mix.
Tip #4
When you are disposing of 4th of July decorations and fireworks, make sure that they are completely free of heat and fire. This way there will not be a smoldering fire happening after the party is over.
Tip #5
Make sure that the area you are lighting fireworks off is also free of bushes, dry grass, trees, streamers, balloons, flammable helium, and other fire hazardous materials.
Tip #6
Stay away from illegal fireworks. They are illegal due to the increased danger involved with certain types of fireworks. Here is a list of the fireworks to avoid.
Large re-loadable mortar shells
Cherry bombs
Ariel bombs
M-80 salutes
Large firecrackers

Organized and Happy.

I am officially organized and happy thanks to Sarah Murphy of www.organizedandhappy.com
Sarah came in and straightened up my family room and both of my boy's rooms.  The kids had taken over the house and I needed her professional organization skills to take back control.

No School Days....

School is back in session today, but we did have a long weekend with the Easter holiday.  My older son has been sick on and off for about week now.  Yes, I did take him to the doctor and it seems to only be a stomach bug.  My 7 year old was not well yesterday and my 5 year old had energy to spare.

I took my 5 year old to Leaping Lizards http://jtinflatables.com/ in Mandan.  He had fun playing with the other kids, bouncing on the inflatables, and playing air hockey.  The best part of it was he went to bed around 10 pm and that's a big deal for him.  Mission accomplished for this Mom during a no school day.

Real Estate should be warming up with the weather also.  Call me if you're ready to start your home search or want to get a home sold.

Rise of the Guardians

This is how I ended up at the movie, Rise of the Guardians. Friday morning I told Hayden that if he got a 12 out of 12 on his spelling test I would take him to the movies. I knew I would take him to the movie, but I didn't really expect him to get a 100% on his spelling quiz. He's a smart boy, but spelling has been a challenge for him so far this year in school. BUT...he did it. The movie was a definite event and so we went Sunday.
The movie was one of the better kid's movies I have been to. It was fun to watch and the boys stayed entertained the whole time. That's all I can ask for when I spend $70 on tickets and popcorn.

Cowboy Christmas

Tis the season for Cowboy Christmas in Medora. My family and I went last year and it was a nice "opening weekend" to bring on the Christmas spirit. They had plenty of quality acitivities to do and the people in Medora were very welcoming. So, we're going to go again this year!
You can find more information at Facebook. Just type in Medora Cowboy Christmas and you should easily find it. Last night my son wrapped up the Chinese class, Clever Dragons. The whole class went out to the China Star and ate and the children put on a nice presentation. Teacher Karmen gave every student a certificate. The kids were very proud of themselves.
In Real Estate: A lot of new construction is going on around town. You should use a REALTOR(R) if you are planning to build. A REALTOR(R) represents YOU and YOUR best interests. They can help you throughout the process from: A) Signing the contract; B) To how much to pay in earnest money; C) To help guide you if your home is not completed in time; D) What if your home does not appraise out; E) Everything in Between Be proactive with your build from the beginning. Many builders will pay for your REALTOR's commission. It's well worth the investment to have guidance when building.

Thanksgiving Day Vacation

I hope everyone had a Great Thanksgiving! I spent time with my family. I was able to pull off a great ham thanks to Sam's Club. I did end up peeling and cutting potatoes because I showed up to my cousin's house before anyone else. Not a big deal. I remember being on potato duty when I was 10 years old. Grandma made pies. Then we all sat around and played Apples to Apples until my older son had a meltdown. At least one person has to fall apart at the holidays. The meltdown was caused by a hurt foot. Couch Cushions on the floor + 2 boys running around = foot injury It also equals a doctor's appointment tomorrow. I DID NOT DO ANY EXTREME SHOPPING FOR BLACK FRIDAY. Saturday rolled around and I took my 5 year old to bell ring for the Salvation Army on behalf of Rotary. He did not last long. He fell asleep like a homeless man on the bench inside the entry way of Scheels.
I followed up Sunday with an Open House at 1120 S 7th St in Bismarck. Afterwards I tackled my artificial Christmas Tree and other Christmas decorations. I still fit in plenty of movies :)

Cake Baking

We had a long weekend at home.  There was no school on Friday or Monday.  Plus, we had a snow storm.  So, I was sliding around a little in my car on Friday at 4:30 in the afternoon and decided it was time to slip and slide home and stay put.  There I was watching Christmas movies (already!) and doing a little laundry.  My 7 year old wanted to bake a cake.

So we made a Pineapple Up Cake.

Here is the recipe we put together.....

Grab a 13"x9" pan and spray it with non-stick spray
Heat the oven according to the directions on the cake box.

Melt 1/3 cup of butter in the microwave.
Add 1/2 cup of brown sugar to the butter and stir.  Spread in the bottom of the pan.

Place pineapple rings on top of the butter and sugar mixture.  Place 1/2 a maraschino cherry in the center of each ring.

Take a box of cake mix and prepare it according to the box directions.  I chose pineapple cake mix.  Spread that evenly into the cake mix.  Bake according to the box directions.

Easy Pineapple Upside Down Cake!

Halloween

I made it back from vacation in Massachusetts.  The fall colors were wonderful to see.  I spent time in Boston, Salem, and Auburn.

Halloween is almost here!  I still have to finish my kids costumes.  They both want to be characters from the Skylander's game. I am taking my kids to the Haunted House/Silent Auction/Carnival at Prairie Rose School (south of Bismarck) on the 27th.  It's open to the public.  The carnival has a cake walk and games.  It's a fun and inexpensive activity.  Tickets are $0.25.
I found a fun recipe for Brain Dip! Brain Dip

Predicting the Future (weekend)

Oh, the places that I will go this weekend.... First, I am officially obligated by my boys to go to the Pumpkin Patch tomorrow because I let the cat out of the bag. I am excited to go too, but sometimes a laziness sets in on the weekend and it's REALLY hard to leave the house :)
I will definitely follow up the Pumpkin Patch with a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte as long as a world shortage on Pumpkin flavoring hasn't taken effect. (I heard a terrible rumor about this).
I am going to follow it up with church on Sunday and then an Open House at 539 MARILYN DR, Mandan. I would love to see you out there and I would enjoy some company! SUNDAY 1-2:30.

Bismarck Happenings

I am a big fan of Papa's Pumpkin Patch. I am planning to take my kids this weekend.
SEASON: The 2012 season at Papa’s Pumpkin Patch is Sept. 10 – Oct. 20. We haul pumpkins and all of our other produce like squash, gourds, straw bales, corn stalks and decorative corn into the yards each week in September so you always see a fresh supply of fall color. HOURS: Papa’s Pumpkin Patch is open 12-7 pm daily, weather permitting. Always double check the home page of Papa’s website or Facebook fan page if you’re uncertain about the weather or our hours. We try to post our intentions for each day by 11 am. If we need to close the patch during the day, we will post our closing on the website and fan page as soon as we make the decision. Mother Nature in North Dakota can be challenging sometimes! COSTS: General admission at Papa’s Pumpkin Patch is $3/person. Infants and toddlers age 2 or younger are free. If you are visiting Papa’s Pumpkin Patch on Monday through Friday as part of a pre-scheduled group or party, the cost is $1/person.
